This is an argument winner against a male student who despised seeing video cameras on campus, even over the dark and dangerous pathways of the northeast campus. I'm not necessarily voting for the Big Brother eyes-in-the-skies but I've found that many men want their privacy protected at the cost of women's safety. Predation happens. Kudos to the University Police and to the students' intervention, and best healing wishes to the victim.

As a staff member in an office near where this assault occured, I want to say how proud I was of the MANY faculty, staff, and students who were willing to get involved and helped this woman. She was smart to call out for help, and she definitely got help! The faculty of the Human Development Department were in a nearby meeting and came out to confront the assailant, who was still trying to approach the student in the corridor. Students and staff from Liberal Studies and Center for Community Engagement provided support for the woman and several came forward as witnesses, and Vanessa, the manager of the Beach Hut, was most likely the person following the assailant with her cell phone to help police apprehend him. Finally, the campus police were quick to respond and were both professional and compassionate in dealing with the student. THAT is a community in action!
